Assoc. Prof. G. Antonarakis (Switzerland)
Title of lecture 1: Orthodontic Management in the Permanent Dentition of patients with Orofacial Clefts. Title of lecture 2: Different Treatment Protocols for patients with Orofacial Clefts.
Gregory Antonarakis is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthodontics at the
University of Geneva. He received his dental degree from Cardiff, UK, and his orthodontic
specialty training from Geneva, Switzerland. He subsequently completed his PhD on functional
appliance treatments in Gothenburg, Sweden, and then went on to pursue a clinical fellowship in
cleft and craniofacial orthodontics in Toronto, Canada. Gregory then returned to the University
of Geneva, Switzerland where he has been working since, with a special interest in the treatment
of patients with clefts and craniofacial anomalies, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and individuals
with special needs.
Dr. K. Alexandrou (Greece)
Title of lecture: The Role of Plastic Surgery in the Management of Cleft Lip and Palate patients.
Dr. Konstantinos Alexandrou is a plastic surgeon. He earned his medical degree from the University of Athens in 1985 and completed his General Surgery training at three leading public and private hospitals in Greece.
He went on to further specialize in Plastic Surgery through a four-year scholarship awarded by the Japanese Ministry of Education. At Kagawa University in Japan, he specialized in the treatment of congenital conditions such as cleft lip and palate and microtia, as well as reconstructive microsurgery and Asian aesthetic procedures including blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty, and otoplasty.
In 1996, Dr. Alexandrou continued his training in the United States, where he was completed a Craniofacial Surgery Fellowship under the mentorship of Professor Joe McCarthy at New York University. There, he received advanced training in craniofacial and orthognathic surgery, with significant experience in complex reconstructive and cosmetic procedures.
During his time in the U.S., he trained at several prestigious medical institutions, including Tisch Hospital, Bellevue Hospital, and Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital in New York. His training emphasized advanced aesthetic procedures such as facelifts, rhinoplasty, abdominoplasty, liposuction, and breast augmentation, reduction, and reconstruction.
During his time in the United States, he trained at several major medical centers, including Tisch Hospital, Bellevue Hospital, and Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital. His clinical focus included facelifts, rhinoplasty, abdominoplasty, liposuction, and breast augmentation, reduction, and reconstruction.
After returning to Greece, he joined the Hellenic Craniofacial Center under the mentorship of Dr. Alexandros Stratoudakis.
Dr. Alexandrou currently focuses on aesthetic and craniofacial surgery and performs procedures in collaboration with leading hospitals throughout Greece.

Title of lecture 1: The Genome and Its Importance in Health and Disease.

Stylianos E. Antonarakis is currently Emeritus Professor (active) at the University of Geneva. He was previously Professor and founding Chairman of Genetic Medicine at the University of Geneva Medical School, and the founding director of iGE3 (institute of Genetics and Genomics of Geneva).
He is a medical, molecular, human geneticist, physician-scientist, who studied extensively the relationship between genomic and phenotypic variation. He received his MD (1975) and DSc (1982) from the University of Athens Medical School, and after a specialization in Pediatrics in the University Hospital, Athens Greece, he moved to Baltimore, Maryland to the program of Medical Genetics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine with Haig H. Kazazian and Victor McKusick (1980-1983).
He joined the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University in 1983 and rose to full professor of Pediatric Genetics, Biology and Medicine in 1990. He moved to Geneva, Switzerland in 1992 to chair Genetic Medicine in the University of Geneva. His research work includes the structural and functional analysis of the genome, molecular bases of monogenic disorders and complex genetic disorders including the beta-thalassemias, hemophilias, and trisomy 21.
His laboratory participated in the human genome sequence and functional analysis, particularly on chromosome 21. He is an international expert on disorders of chromosome 21, identifying genes for genetic disorders, development of diagnostic tests, genome structure and function, studies of the genome variability, and conserved non-coding sequences in human DNA.
He created World Down Syndrome Day (March 21st), which helps integrate fellow men having this condition into society and promotes research. He has published hundreds of scientific papers and is one of the most influential scientists on a global basis. Dozens of his students are professors at renowned universities. He has been awarded the Allan Award in 2019, which is the highest recognition of genetic research worldwide. One of his students, Professor Gregg Semenza, was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2019 for findings that were partially made in Professor Antonarakis' laboratory. He was President of the European Society of Human Genetics (ESHG) and the international Human Genome Organisation (HUGO). He has worked towards genomic equity in all states of the world.
Prof. M. Papadopoulos (Greece)
Title of lecture: Orthodontic/Surgical Management of Cleft Lip and Palate patients.
Prof. Moschos A. Papadopoulos is Professor, Chairman and Program Director at the Department of Orthodontics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, and Visiting Professor at the University of Vienna, Austria, and of Messina and of Naples, Italy. He was the founder and served as first President of the Balkan Association of Orthodontic Specialists and President of the Orthodontic Society of Northern Greece. Dr. Papadopoulos is Honorary Editor of the "Hellenic Orthodontic Review", was Asst. Editor of the "World Journal of Orthodontics” and is/was Member of the Editorial Board of 21 peer reviewed journals, and Reviewer for 47 journals. He is also active member in more than 23 national and international societies. Dr. Papadopoulos received several awards and distinctions (among others from AAO, AJO-DO, WFO, BAOS, FEO, GAPS, GOS, OSNG, HSE, and AUTh), and his main interests include the subjects of "noncompliance orthodontic treatment", "temporary anchorage devices in orthodontics", and "evidence-based orthodontics". Dr. Papadopoulos has written three books, has published more than 235 scientific publications, and has presented more than 420 lectures, courses and papers worldwide.
Prof. Ioannis Iatrou (Greece)
Title of lecture: The Role of Maxillofacial Surgery in the Management of Cleft Lip and Palate patients.
Dr. I. Iatrou was elected Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Dental School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 2012. His academic career started in Athens in 1985 as Lecturer. He was Head of the Department 2014-2016. During the years 1999-2016 he was Director of the OMFS University Clinic at the “A. Kyriakou” Children’s Hospital of Athens. He studied both Dentistry (1967-72) and Medicine (1977-83), and became PhD (1985) at the University of Athens-Greece. His post doctoral studies took place at the OMFS Clinic, University of Cologne, Germany (1987-89, Head: Prof. H.D. Pape). He was Director of the post-graduate program on ”Dentoalveolar Surgery”, Dental School, University of Athens (2012 – 16). He has been also President of the Hellenic Association of OMFS (2006-08 and 2014-17). 2017 HE was nominated Professor Emeritus, University of Athens. In 2018 he was nominated Doctor Honoris Causa “Carol Davila” Medical University of Bucharest Romania.
He is member of the European Association for Craniomaxillofacial Surgery, Councilor for Greece (2010-2016), member of the Editorial Board and reviewer of its official Journal. He has organized several OMFS Congresses and Seminars in Greece and abroad and has been honorary guest speaker in 14 European countries and Saudi Arabia. His PhD Dissertation was about «Anaerobic bacteria in jaw cysts» (1985). He is the writer of a clinical research study entitled «The contribution of small plates in Surgery of Facial bones» (2000) and two chapters (Maxillofacial Traumatology and OMFS for Children) at the Textbook «Current OMF Surgery» (2010). His 50 publications in peer reviewed Journals as shown at the Pubmed have been cited 800 times (till 15.01.2020). His main fields of interest are maxillofacial traumatology and oncology, maxillofacial surgery for children, orthognathic surgery, clefts, distraction osteogenesis, jaw reconstruction and implantology and oral surgery.

Title of lecture: The Basler Concept for Treating Cleft Lip and Palate (CLP) Patients in Switzerland.

Dr. A. Xofyllis (Greece)
Title of lecture: Speech Disorders in patients with Orofacial Clefts.
Athanasios Xofyllis, Ph.D., C.C.C./SLP, is a Speech & Language Pathologist.
He completed his advanced training in the United States at the University of Illinois and Loyola University and pursued further specialization and professional collaboration with Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, and Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He established the first Voice Pathology Center in Greece at the “Hygeia” Hospital in Athens, where he served as director. He was also a co-founder of the Hellenic Craniofacial Center in 1996 along with the late plastic and craniofacial surgeon Alexandros Stratoudakis,
Among other distinctions, he has been a licensed member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) since 1987, the American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association (ACPA) since 1984, and the Voice Foundation.
He currently lives and works in Thessaloniki.
Dr. M. Maroulakos (Greece)
Title of lecture: Orthodontic Management in the Mixed Dentition of Cleft Lip and Palate patients.
Dr Michael Maroulakos is trained in the Specialty of Orthodontics. He received his dental degree from the University of Athens in 2005 and he completed a residency and a Masters in Orthodontics at the same University in 2012. He achieved board certification from the Ministry of Health in 2013. In 2015, he completed a Craniofacial, Surgical, and Special Care Orthodontics Fellowship at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where he received scholarship from the American Dental Society of Europe and he became a visiting assistant professor at the same University. He is a PhD candidate at Trinity College Dublin, researching the legitimacy of biomedical publications.
He maintains a busy orthodontic private practice for kids, adolescents, and adults at Natural Smiles Specialized Dentistry in Alimos, Athens. He frequently receives dental continuing education in his field in Greece and abroad and has been an active member of several Greek, American, and international Orthodontic associations. He has served as a clinical Invisalign consultant for orthodontists of four countries for two years. Furthermore, his shares his expertise at the University of Athens where he serves as a part-time clinical instructor and has been a member of the Greek Craniofacial Center, that specializes in the rehabilitation of complex craniofacial problems.
Dr. K. Apostolopoulos (Greece)
Title of lecture: Orthodontic Management in the Mixed Dentition of Cleft Lip and Palate patients.
Dr. Konstantinos Apostolopoulos earned his DDS from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and completed his Orthodontic Residency and Master of Science in Dentistry at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU). He further completed a fellowship in Craniofacial, Surgical, and Special Care Orthodontics at CWRU and University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics.
Dr. Apostolopoulos is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthodontics at CWRU and serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgery. His research interests include 3D imaging, craniofacial asymmetry, cleft lip and palate, mini-implant placement, and digital orthodontic workflows, with publications in multiple peer-reviewed international journals. Alongside his academic work, he has extensive clinical experience as an orthodontist in the United States and holds professional licensure in Greece.
Dr. S. Matthaios (Greece)
Title of lecture: Infant Nasoalveolar Molding (NAM): The Orthodontist’s Role in Multidisciplinary Orofacial Cleft Care.
Dr. Stefanos Matthaios earned his DDS from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and an MSc in Medical Research Methodology from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He went on to receive a Specialty Certificate in Orthodontics and a Master of Science in Dentistry from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), where he is currently completing a CODA-accredited fellowship in Craniofacial, Surgical, and Special Care Orthodontics. His research on 3D printing applications in orthodontics has been published in leading journals. In addition to teaching orthodontic residents and dental students at CWRU, he served during his residency as U.S. Ambassador for the European Postgraduate Student Orthodontic Society.
